Tuesday 2nd September saw the launch of a brand new class at the wonderful Bird Studios in Brighton.
To celebrate there was a free class, goody bags featuring the cute ballet logo Keep Calm and Point Your Toes! Vintage ballerina cupcakes and of course some bubbly!
The studios have been refurbished to a fabulous standard with dance flooring, ballet barres, mirrors and professional sound system. There is also a lovely cafe for students to enjoy a coffee and catch up before or after class. Bird Studios is definitely bringing the West End vibe to Brighton and Brighton Dance and Drama is proud to be associated.
Teacher Charlie Plunkett says 'The New York City Ballet style class is something I have created after being inspired by the New York City Ballet Workout some thirteen years ago. What particularly appealed to me was that the dancers were all ex-principles, many of whom had retired from the company to have a family. They all were so toned and had healthy bodies and the workout was broken down in such a way that anyone could follow it. My class starts with a gentle New York City Ballet style warm-up in the centre. Always to beautiful classical music and always simple enough allow students to relax and settle their minds ready for an hour of ballet bliss. I love to teach a traditional ballet barre and centre work. I often take inspiration from professional company classes including The Royal Ballet, The Scottish Ballet and the Bolshoi. A fun course I recently completed saw students learning repertoire from Swan Lake during part of the class and we all felt very proud of ourselves channeling our inner swans, if a little out of breath from giggling!
Class is tailored to meet my students needs. I have had the pleasure of teaching such a spectrum of dancers. From adults who wanted to do ballet when they were children but didn't have the opportunity through to professional dancers, sportspeople and even an aerialist. The fabulous thing about ballet is that everyone can benefit from it and taking class regularly improves posture, flexibility, co-ordination and builds stamina as well as being so much fun.
The last section of the class is a New York City Ballet style stretch and tone on mats. As the relaxing music washes over us, I have a sequence of exercises to tone the muscles including possibly the most fabulous ballet abs exercise ever! Class finishes with a deep stretch so that everyone is walking tall for the rest of the week.
